CNA Careers

Deciding to become a CNA can be the gateway into finding out if you truly want a job in the field of medicine. A CNA career will give you the basic training needed to do the personal care that each and every patient needs, whether it be in a hospital setting, a doctors office or a nursing home. Many people that choose to attend CNA classes decide to continue their education and become LPN's or RN's, which are higher paying jobs. Most RN's state that working as a CNA first helped them immensely by giving them the knowledge they needed to do the hands-on work with patients, plus they learned the basics of medical charting, and got the general idea of what is expected of the nursing staff.

If you decide to stay with a CNA career you can be assured that there will always be CNA employment openings. Part of the reasoning behind this is that there is a shortage of CNA's. Another reason is that the population of baby boomers are becoming older and need more medical care. The chances of finding good CNA employment are even higher for males that become CNA nursing assistants. They are in high demand to work in the field of nursing and there is a vast shortage of men who choose this type of job.

The job you choose as your CNA career is of personal preference. You can choose to work in a small, private doctors office where some of your duties may include calling the patient in from the waiting area, measuring them and charting their weight, taking their blood pressure, pulse and respiration, and recording their chief complaint for the doctor to read. You may also be expected to apply bandages or change dressings on wounds, and/or explain to the patient the correct way to care for the wound at home. You will also be expected to stay in the room with the doctor while he makes certain types of exams.

If you choose a CNA career in a nursing home setting, you will be expected to follow the schedule that your superior has made for each patient and do their daily personal care. You will be required to chart things such as their intake of food and liquids. You will be expected to notify your supervisor of any changes you note in the patients condition.

Choosing a CNA career in home health sometimes calls for the CNA to be more independent . You will most likely do all of the patients care in their home setting, which sometimes calls for you to be able to compromise in using what is on hand, instead of having all the usual equipment handy. You will also need to note the patients condition when you arrive and when you leave, and report any changes, even slight, to your supervisor. The patient is usually much more comfortable in their own home. They almost always welcome any help you offer them. Working as a CNA in home health can be quite rewarding, and a CNA salary is also very good.
