CNA's, short for Certified Nursing Assistants, are entry level nursing jobs . The CNA job is done under the direction of a Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse, or Licensed Vocational Nurse in a variety of settings. CNA nursing assistant employment is often in long term care facilities, nursing homes, hospice centers, outpatient clinics, home health care agencies, group homes, correctional facilities, and hospitals to name a few. In many cases CNAs find that they must break into the field of nursing by starting in a nursing home or long term care facility to gain valuable experience since many other settings prefer to hire CNAs with previous experience. The pay and benefits tend to be lower in long term care facilities and nursing homes than in other settings. This tends to result in a high staff turnover and thereby an extreme staffing shortage. This is part of why these types of employers tend to be willing to hire new graduate CNAs.
Once CNAs have gained clinical experience they have a variety of doors open to them in the workforce. CNAs are capable of becoming health unit coordinators and moving into entry level management once they prove their abilities to their employers.
The scope of a CNA certification varies widely by state and is overseen by that state's Board of Nursing. Generally, though, CNAs are not permitted to administer any type of medication, clip or cut toenails, draw blood, give injections, or start IVs. Other types of basic care, such as bowel care, dressing, checking blood glucose, taking blood pressure, and feeding are often within a CNA's scope of practice. Additional CNA training that qualify CNAs to take on more responsibilities, such as wound care and rehabilitation. This type of training is generally done on the job by a CNA's current employer. However, some states offer Restorative Nursing Assistant, or RNA certifications. These types of programs enable CNA's to gain training to complex range of motion exercises and the ability to work with a rehabilitation team to rehabilitate patients. Gaining this type of training not only broadens the CNA's scope of practice, but also increases qualifications, thereby opening up additional employment opportunities. This may also be used to increase the CNA Salary expectancies.
CNA employment and CNA jobs are needed all over the country. The demand for CNA employment is on the rise due to an increasing shortage of CNAs. The shortage of CNAs virtually guarantees CNA employment to any licensed CNA in good standing with the state's Board of Nursing. The salary of a CNA tends to be low in comparison to the workload and responsibilities of the position, which is partially the cause of the nationwide CNA Employment shortage. CNA Wages tend to be between $8 and $14 hourly depending upon the region and experience of the CNA. Experienced CNAs working for staffing agencies can make as much as $18 hourly, but these are generally per diem positions with no benefits.
