HHA Training
HHA Training
The population of old people in our country is steadily growing and many people now prefer to get health care at home. This trend has increased the requirement of a HHA (Home Health Aide) manifold. The demand for HHAs is expected to grow much more in the coming decade and this position is listed among the top ten positions which have the potential to grow the fastest. To become a HHA one has to undergo a simple HHA training which is given by certain vocational schools, community colleges, home health care agencies and elder care programs.
HHA training is quite short and sometimes they also receive on the job training. Compared to other training programs for nurses, HHA training is the easiest to complete and also the shortest. HHA training will include CPR, first aid, ways of physically handling the patient, safety measures and other such training which will ensure the comfort and care of the patient in a home environment. On the job HHA training will be given for taking care of specific cases which need special attention and patients with specific needs.
The qualifications necessary for receiving HHA training may vary in different states and in many states a high school diploma or GED may not be necessary. According to federal law the candidate should receive a minimum of 75 hours of training which includes classroom and hands-on practical training, which is given by a qualified registered nurse.
HHA training will prepare the candidate to give routine care to the patient on a day to day basis. They are trained to effectively move patients in a way which is safe and causes the least discomfort. HHA training also includes bathing, feeding, dressing and toileting the patient. A HHA is also trained in number of household chores like making beds, washing patient’s clothes, cooking food and other similar daily chores.
Before undergoing HHA training, candidates might be required to clear a check on criminal background and also provide proof of good health by getting a tuberculosis test that comes negative and proof of having been vaccinated. As mentioned earlier each state has its own laws regarding HHA and the person might need recertification if he chooses to work in another state.
As HHA training programs vary in each state it is necessary to first decide in which state you are planning to work and then apply for the required training. Certain states also require HHA to have a license to practice their profession.
